The Meaning of the Word Função

The English translation of the word função can have one of several meanings depending on the context: function, role, duty, mission, etc.

To the Portuguese community, it represents one of the oldest traditions in their culture. A função is the act of hosting a dinner and feeding as many people as possible, completely free of charge to those who attend.

It is also a symbol of devotion to the Holy Spirit, and the Portuguese people consider it an honor to be able to host such an event.

This tradition dates back several centuries, inpired by the Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, a Portuguese queen born in 1271. For more information about Saint Elizabeth, click here.

The dinner traditionally consists of cabbage and bread soup, served with local meats and vegetables. For more information about this dish, click here.

The LUSO-American Council 2L of Norco-Corona has been hosting this beautiful tradition every year since 1982 feeding on ocasion, more than 300 people. My father, Antonio Toledo, was one of the founders of this event and played traditional Portuguese-Azorian music with his 15-string guitar every year until his passing on 1996.

By participating you will be helping the Council 2L Norco-Corona continue this beautiful Portuguese tradition for years to come.
